Mystery Midnight Spike
Andrew on: November 27, 2007, 10:01:34 PM
So here is a riddle. Our forum keeps getting a spike of up to 18 Guests online at the same time between midnight and 1am EST. That would be around 9pm to 10pm Pacific time, and 2Pm to 3pm in Japan.
I wonder why. Any ideas?

Possibly... search engine robots/spiders scheduled for a certain time?

I don't think a bot would register as a guest. Also, I'm not sure pages here are actually being tracked in the search engines. I haven't seen any come up in any searches I've done.
It's probably people from Japan. I've got a couple links to this forum on my blog (and *most* of my traffic is from Japan), Sumairu Puffy has some links to the forum on their site, and I'm sure there are some people who visit every day and just read what's new.

Thanks for the time correction. Indiana just started observing Daylight Savings Time for the first time lately -- now I'm time correction impaired lol!
My first guess was that maybe that's the hour when Japanese kids get out of school. Not sure what else would account for it since its more typical to have 3 to 5 Guests on at any one time.
...still not sure.
Grin So if YOU'RE one of our Mystery Midnight Spikers join up and let us know! Grin

Thanks for reminding me. The "CoffeeCup Google SiteMappers" I've been using from Lunar Pages doesn't include any of the forum/index.php? pages for some reason. Think I'll need to check with the "Simple Machines Forum" forum and see what to do. Any ideas?

There seem to be various sitemappers out there for SMF, this one for instance: http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=755
I clicked through to their example and I don't see why Google wouldn't crawl all of the pages there - the forum thread pages are just html pages. Maybe Google is having trouble with the dynamic php links in the regular forum.

Lol. I log in at 12:45 AM and there are 19 guests online. Smiley
Jeff on: November 29 at 05:51:40 AM
Hmmm, it says the most users online today is 5. Does that not count guests?

The forumfs clock is set to Pacific Time. I havenft stayed up late enough to check but I assume the Today-Yesterday tag changes at 3 AM EST.
If you scroll down to the gForum Stats,h click gMore Statsh and then click gNovemberh at the bottom you can see each dayfs stats. For the last four days (starting Monday after 3PM in Japan) the spike has been 22 -24-19-21. Last night it was Jinmouri-san, myself and our 19 Mystery Midnight Spikers = 21 online.
Go Team Spikers!

Yikes, I never looked at that before - kind of embarrassing seeing myself with the second-highest "time online" total.
(In my defense, I use Firefox and just leave about 20 tabs open all the time, clicking through them periodically whenever I take a break from what I'm doing).
