I've listened to it through about three times now... still can't decide. I liked Boom Boom Beat and Kuchibiru Motion the best of the four songs from the singles.

DoAsPuffy on: September 29, 2007, 12:01:34 PM

I'm gonna have to go with "Ain't Gonna Cut It". Awesome lyrics and melody.

Jinmouri on: September 29, 2007, 12:38:40 PM

Closet Full Of Love is my most favorite because the chorus is wonderful and it has good lyrics and a great beat. I think it was the producers that made this song so perfect! Logged

youkai puffy is so kawaii!
they talkin' and singin'!!!
i like it very much!

At first and through a few listenings, Kuchibiru Motion was my favorite, but now Closet Full of Love is really sticking in my brain. And this morning I read the lyrics! Now, it's over the top. I think Closet could have been an even better. I really liked the music from the start, but kind of felt the vocals were lacking a bit. I guess I'm wishing the pronunciation was a bit clearer. I'm really impressed with Butch's music, although I hope Puffy will still collaborate with Andy. I think I'm partial to his pop style much more than the harder edged stuff of late.

Andrew on: October 02, 2007, 08:01:50 PM

After many listens through I think I have to go with Boom Boom Beat followed by Kuchibiru Motion. They were good picks for the single releases I think now.

TofuUnionon: October 03, 2007, 02:34:45 AM

Andrew: I go with you. Anyway the Lyrics of " Boom Boom Beat " fit perfectly into Ami and Yumi themselves.

Sukina koto hyakuman kai, dekiru made kaen nai. ( I won't return until I can do my favorite things a million times. ) ...

Sukina koto mou ikkai, shinai yori wa shite koukai. Jinsei wa nagai kedo seishun wa omotta yori mijikai. Mainichi sandee. ( It's better to do what you love, regrets and all. Life is long but youth is shorter than I thought. Everyday is Sunday. ) ...

That's the way it goes. No one really knows. We still rock the shows. Wink

Jeff on: October 05, 2007, 08:22:46 AM

And they wrote those lyrics, so those are really from the heart. They're not just singing something that somebody else wrote - that's how they feel.

The lyrics are the best part of that song for me, though. Honestly, since I can't understand a lot of their Japanese lyrics, I just pick my favorite songs based on the melodies and the performance. I think my favorite on Honeycreeper is probably "Kimi to O-tobai".

PUFFYsayGO! on: October 06, 2007, 06:02:08 PM

I'd have to say Closet Full Of Love. Great melody and vocals, though the pronunctiation could have been a lot better, especially since Ami's got lead. Then I'd have to say Oedo Nagareboshi IV, since it's a funky ska song, and I really like the lyrics for boom boom beat. Yes, I love it when PUFFY write their own lyrics. I wish they'd written a lot more for this album.

You think? I hear Yumi way more on that song. Maybe my brain is just more tuned in to listen for her voice.

It's a virtual tie between "Oriental Diamond," "Kuchibiru Motion" and "Kimi to Ootobai," but in the end I chose "Kimi to Ootobai." Despite the "borrowed" refrain, I still think it's a very good song.

I've listened a few more times and now I think they're about equal... I think I just listen more for Yumi subconsciously. And both of those songs are kind of tough songs for them (in terms of attitude), which I usually associate more with Yumi. But now I do hear Ami. Especially the way she pronounces "stuff" in the bridge, which is pretty distinct from how Yumi pronounces that word.

I'm finding that even though I wouldn't call it my favorite song by any stretch, the one song I can't get out of my head on a daily basis now is Kuchibiru Motion. I think its beat must match the rhythm of my footsteps or something.

PUFFYsayGO! on October 10, 2007, 05:25:29 PM

I don't think I like for wither of their voices. It's more like they find me. I listen to a song, and one of their voices will sound more in the lead, then I listen even carefully to see if it really is who I first think it is. Sometimes they'll create a voice that I have trouble telling who is singing.

I hear Yumi in "Youkai PUFFY" and Ami more in "Closet Full Of Love", which is why I think they have their photos next to the songs in the booklet the way they do. I'm actually listening to "Closet" now, and it's hard for me to hear Yumi. I think I hear her a bit in the chorus, but not as strong as Ami.

I think that's just the way it worked out in the insert, I doubt it means anything. They're clearly not singing solo, so neither would even subconsciously take credit for either of those songs.

I just listened to "Closet" again and I definitely hear them both about equally now. In parts, I still hear Yumi louder. The chorus definitely is more Yumi, from beginning to end (it's actually more obvious at the beginning and end, when the instruments drop out).

The middle part is also almost totally Yumi ("so much is hidden inside..."). That airy quality, that vibrato that's distinct from Ami's.

I can buy that the verses are more Ami, although I still think I hear them pretty equally there.

As for Youkai Puffy, I think they're alternating somewhat on that track too, but I hear Ami more. The easy way to tell is in the bridge after the chorus... the same voice sings the first "Puffy the monster..." as sings the verses, but the second "Puffy the monster" in the background is clearly Yumi. The third is the main voice again, which then must be Ami, although you can hear Yumi join her again after the third "Puffy the monster".

I really actually hear Yumi on more of the album than Ami, though. My initial reaction was that the album was really unbalanced in favor of Yumi, although it's possible I've mistaken Yumi for Ami in a couple cases. I think Yumi's voice has changed to the point now where I think the timbre of it just overpowers Ami if they're mixed equally and singing in unison, especially if the register is either very low or very high. Ami really only comes through in the middle.

So which is your favorite song so far - Page Two

Andrew on: October 11, 2007, 05:47:16 AM

Thought I'd give the current tally to this question from Puffy Polls. As of today's 35 votes:

Oriental Diamond 17.1%
Ain't Gonna Cut It 8.6%
Kimi to Ootobai 0.0%
Kuchibiru Motion 17.1%
Hayai Kuruma 0.0%
Sayonara Summer 8.6%
Boom Boom Beat 20.0%
Youkai Puffy 2.9%
Closet Full of Love 17.1%
Hasan Jauze 0.0%
Complaint 5.7%
Oh Edo Nagareboshi IV 2.9%
Island 0.0%

Total votes: 35

So Boom Boom Beat is the most popular with 20% followed by a three-way tie between Oriental Diamond, Kuchibiru Motion and Closet Full of Love.

Actually, I'm starting to hear Yumi more in the chorus. It's strange, really; there doesn't seem to be much of a vocal pattern to Closet. Ami sings the verses, then Yumi does the chorus and the few lines in the middle.

I haven't really been paying attention, but does it seem like they sing in unison or harmonize on honeycreeper? I think it's a mix of both. I liked it when they harmonized, during the Sturmer days. I think it's true what someone said about this being a hybrid album, combining the different styles they've done before. Here they harmonize, but they're also backed up by male vocalists like in the early years.

Seems like they're mostly singing in unison, although they mix it up every once in a while. Honestly, I think this is pretty standard for them. Andy's style was maybe a little different, and it was nice, but Honeycreeper sounds a little more like the old albums in this regard. Splurge was similar. Most of the verses are in unison, the bridges and choruses can be either/or.

I'm casting my vote for Closet Full of Love =0 I gave the album several, several ... several listens through and I just can't stop singing this song while I'm at home or at work. The singing it at work seems to get the weirdest reactions hehe

As an update: as of today's 50 votes at Puffy Polls the tally is now:

Oriental Diamond 16.0%
Ain't Gonna Cut It 8.0%
Kimi to Ootobai 0.0%
Kuchibiru Motion 18.0%
Hayai Kuruma 0.0%
Sayonara Summer 6.0% Boom Boom Beat 16.0%
Youkai Puffy 4.0%
Closet Full of Love 24.0%
Hasan Jauze 0.0%
Complaint 6.0%
Oh Edo Nagareboshi IV 2.0%
Island 0.0%

So Closet Full of Love now leads followed by Kuchibiru Motion and then a tie between Oriental Diamond and Boom Boom Beat.
