Song meanings...

Original Page.

Ello everyone, I have a question that has perplexed me for quite some time. What's the meaning of the song Radio Tokyo? What are they exactly talking about? What's the "underground commitee"? I'm just so confuzzled. >_<'

It's basically about the takeover of a corporate rock radio station.

It's a cover song, so those lyrics weren't specifically written for (and certainly not by) Puffy.

Welcome to the forum Asuka!

The song was written by Butch Walker. He was kind enough to give me an interview for Puffy AmiYumi World earlier this year. Here is the interview. In it he says:

Quote
Q: Was there any particular inspiration or background story for the music for Radio Tokyo?

BW: It was a dream I had about the crumbling of the music industry, then it crumbled...

Here is my page on the song with lyrics. I'm not sure exactly what "underground committee" means other than a reference to corporate executive types who make decisions about musicians and their careers.

if you read the lyric is kinda self explanatory, I took it as the writer's disdain for corporately manufactered bands *which is kinda funny since Puffy was ... hehe*

"that's where theyll decide if you'll be praised or youll be tied up on the bathroom floor"
the suits decide who gets popular

"as you scream for more"
regardless of what they decide, the general public still eats it up

and really it just goes on like that - makes me wonder who Mr. Walker was thinking of in particular... =)

Ohhhhh so that's what it's means. ^^ Thanks a bunch Andrew and Cerahbes. ^^

Holy crap. I'm so dense.. I guess Puffy's accented English makes actually LOOKING INTO the lyrics all the more difficult for me. Although, I must confess I never really explore lyrics on my own.. even with the Beatles, I relied on what I read from websites and books about meanings which I just stumbled upon.

I really like Paul McCartney's take on song meanings -- it's great if you know what the song is actually about, but it's just as cool to put your own meaning to the lyrics.

Or look to Don Henley's reaction when Steve Kroft asked him what "Hotel California" was about. His answer: "that's boring."

Haha! I'm stupid, all this time I've been hearing it as "underground chameleon"! I thought it was club or something, and couldn't understand what the heck the song was about! Thanks for setting me straight, guys! Wonder what else my brain is butchering!

ichigo's puffy lyric knowledge = zero! Grin

And I hope I didn't just ruin the song for you guys....someone once told me they misheard a lyric in Paul McCartney's song "Coming Up". Instead of "coming up", they heard "scummy love" and now that's what I hear every time I hear the song! Sorry guys!

That is marvelous! Now I'm going to hear that every time I listen to that song...

Of course, I'm no better -- when I was younger, in the song "Getting Better" I'd hear the lyric "I used to be cruel to my woman, I beat her and kept her apart from the things that she loved..." as "I used to be cruel to my woman, I beat her to death..." Of course, that doesn't scan with the rest of the line, but does that really matter?

Not that Paul needs any help with cheesy lyrics. For example:

"I'm getting closer / My salamander.."

Or

"I want you to lie on the bed / Get you ready for my polygon..."

I still love the man, though.

Cerahbes on: November 26, 2007, 11:20:29 PM
